The Lucerne Festival Academy is an institution for the training and support of highly gifted young musicians. The academy was founded by the Lucerne Festival and its associated partners to strengthen its commitment to and work on behalf of modern music and provide long-term support its performance and understanding. The Academy’s Artistic Directors are Wolfgang Rihm and Matthias Pintscher, it was formerly Pierre Boulez (1925-2016). The teaching faculty is provided by the 30 musicians of the Ensemble InterContemporain from Paris which was founded by Pierre Boulez. At the heart of the academy lies the Academy Orchestra, made up of the approx. 120 scholars conducted by Wolfgang Rihm and Matthias Pintscher. Its repertoire consists of works beginning with the second Viennese school and continuing right up to contemporary scores. In addition to the orchestral works, contemporary ensemble pieces are also studied. Kunststiftung NRW funds up to seven North Rhine-Westphalia scholarships per year to take part in Lucerne Festival Academy.
